The St.Paul Winter Carnival has been going on since 1886. Amazingly it is the oldest winter festival in the United States.
A co-worker from Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5th Rahila Hungiapuko had also participated in this process last year. The carnival entails each female candidate to acquire a sponsor to help them finance the adventure. According to Rahila, this is a “131 year old legend that brings families and visitors together to celebrate winter, St. Paul, and it's many beautiful hills. The guards are only 101 years old since they're newer. While the queens and princesses are selected through a candidacy programs.”
I must say that it was a lot to take in, as I have never really been informed about all of the history behind the St.Paul Winter Carnival. To me each year it has just been going to the ice park, and wondering why there were men dressed in all red with fire. It is crazy to now know about all of the work, dedication, volunteering, nonprofit work, ticket sales, rehearsals, etc that go into this each year! Who is crowned queen then dedicates their entire year to being queen and going around different businesses, non-profits, hospitals, nursing homes, charity, volunteering, press, and so much more.
I attended the fashion show where the candidates were provided with clothes to wear down the runway by sponsors such as Chico's. The candidates were able to choose what they wore. They showcased various looks from casual to formal ballgowns.
The final event was coronation night! Every candidate up to be nominated for princess or queen was dressed in an all white gown that almost embodied a wedding gown. It was a really amazing experience watching every different royal family come from each direction of the wind. Some of the members have been affiliated for over 40 years! They also made a musical out of the event which was a fun way for individuals like myself to learn more about the entire scenario and process.
I wore: A green and gold toned dress that embodied an Egyptian feel. The gold collar necklace also was a fabulous detail to bring out the gold throughout the dress.
