National hedgehog day is February 2nd, therefore cute little party hats were necessary!
Why did I get a hedgehog? I had seen them all over Instagram accounts, from bloggers to random animal accounts and fell in love! You could say they are even pretty trendy. Willis was a little camera shy on National Hedgehog Day unfortunately due to my roommates cat being in the room.

Finding a hedgehog to purchase….is not as easy as you might think. Living in Minnesota, they can only be found in specialty pet stores and or at-home breeders. A few pet shops that stated online that they had some hedgehogs, but when I called they did not have any. So I gave up on the hedgehog search.
But, it was meant to be. This summer I interned in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Apparently Wisconsin is a state with a good amount of hedgehog breeders! Another girl interning with me also had a hedgehog, and once I saw her’s it was confirmed that I wanted my own. I drove to the nearest one which was about 30 minutes away, and got to take home my little buddy!
Do your research before getting a hedgehog! If you want a pet that you can cuddle up to each night, this is not the pet for you. They naturally roll into a ball as a defense mechanism, and therefore the quills spike out. It is uncomfortable to hold in your hand when they are like this! I typically wear gloves when first taking Willis out. They also always sound like they are puffing out air while shaking. This is normal! Due to their poor eyesight, they use smell (the puffing noise) as a way to get a feel for their surroundings. Surprisingly Willis was not too terrified of the little dog Daisy!
